PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A man is in critical condition after a shooting involving Phoenix police on Tuesday morning.
A spokesperson with Phoenix Police says officers responded to a trespassing call at an IHOP at 19th and Northern avenues around 4:15 a.m. after a restaurant employee told dispatch that a man was acting erratically and cutting himself.
According to police, officers arrived and the man reportedly started walking towards them with a hatchet while ignoring their commands. One officer deployed a less-lethal weapon, but police say the suspect kept advancing.
That’s when another officer shot the man. Police rendered aid until paramedics arrived, and he has since been transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
No officers were hurt.
Northern Avenue remains closed
