DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) - Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird is issuing a warning about deepfakes as students return to school.

The term “deepfakes” refers to realistic images that are created using artificial intelligence (AI). Deepfakes are sometimes used to bully or harass others.

According to Bird, there has been an increase in the use of deepfakes to “create non-consensual nude or sexually explicit images of students.” These images can have lasting and harmful impacts.

“Deepfakes used for bullying are not a harmless prank. It’s a criminal act with real consequences,” said Bird. “The start of the school year is a critical time for parents to discuss overall online safety with their children, but it’s also important to know what to do if your child is the victim of a deepfake.
