OBX community celebrates 16th birthday of teen wounded at Avalon Pier

Billy returned to Avalon Pier Thursday evening, exactly two weeks

after the shooting there, to celebrate his 16th birthday.

Last night, the teenage boy named Billy — wounded on July 31 st by an errant bullet — returned to Avalon Pier to celebrate his 16 th birthday. Despite the fact that the bullet is still lodged in his thigh, too close to his femoral artery to safely remove, the night was about hope for the future. It was the return of a young man whose vacation had been interrupted in a horrific way.

Standing outside on the pier in the twilight, Billy’s mom shook her head and said, “He was in the right place, but just at the wrong time.”
