GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Omaha Police Narcotics Unit is warning about a dangerous new mixture of drugs that includes fentanyl.
Investigators said they recently found a substance called “purple fentanyl.” Police said the drug contains lidocaine, an anesthetic that intensifies the side effects of fentanyl.
Because lidocaine is not an opioid, the effects of purple fentanyl cannot be reversed by Narcan, authorities said.
Grand Island Police Division Chief Dean Elliott said the drug has not been reported in central Nebraska, but he believes it is only a matter of time.
“We haven’t seen it in our area yet, but again, I say yet because drug patterns tend to go from the larger metropolitan areas and then work their way out from there,” Elliott said.
