ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A Senate Special Committee met for the first time Tuesday to see how Georgia could do away with the state’s income tax.

It’s a platform many Republican lawmakers have run on, including Republican Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in his bid for Governor.

“We have always talked about reducing the tax burden on hardworking Georgians,” said Jones before the first meeting.

If Georgia does eliminate the state income tax, it would add more than five percent to the average worker’s paycheck.

“You’ve got Georgia families who are feeling the pinch at the pump, they’re feeling the pinch on groceries, if they’re a working family—childcare is expensive for them, so if we can give them an automatic five percent raise in their pockets, that’s something we need to look at," said
