EMMET COUNTY — The Health Department of Northwest Michigan confirmed a human case of West Nile virus in Emmet County, according to an Aug. 19 news release.

West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne illness in the continental United States. It spreads from infected birds to humans through mosquito bites. Most people infected do not develop symptoms, but about 1 in 5 may experience fever, headache and body aches. Roughly 1 in 150 cases result in more serious illness, including inflammation of the brain or spinal cord. Older adults are at higher risk of severe symptoms.
