FRANKFORT, Ky. — Kentuckians in the 502 region will eventually see a second area code .

According to a release, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator informed the Kentucky Public Service Commission that it will be 761 and will likely be assigned in 2027. This is because the NANPA estimates that the 502 area code, which serves north-central Kentucky, will soon exhaust its supply of available telephone numbers.

After a series of public meetings, the PSC said it was more efficient and cost-effective to implement an area code overlay versus splitting the area code, which had been done twice in Kentucky over the past 30 years.
