FRANKFORT, Ky. —

The Louisville region is getting a new area code to go along with Kentucky's existing five area codes.

The Public Service Commission announced "761" as the Commonwealth's newest area code, which will overlay central Kentucky's signature 502 area code.

The addition comes as the 502 area code could soon run out of available phone numbers.

The North American Numbering Plan Administrator informed the PSC that residents in the 502 area code region will soon be seeing the second area code, which will be in addition to 502.

The new 761 area code will likely begin to be assigned in 2027, said the PSC.

When new phone numbers for the 502 area code are exhausted, new customers will be assigned a 761 area code.
