KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Two days after Tenenssee’s Sunday night announcement naming Joey Aguilar the team’s week one starting quarterback, Josh Heupel spoke with the media for the first time.

While Tennessee’s decision to name the former Appalachian State standout as the team’s starting signal caller didn’t come as a surprise, the timing did. The initial report came from Volquest’s Brent Hubbs at 8:41 p.m. Sunday night, with Tennessee confirming the report at 8:47 p.m.

“It felt like it was the right time, for him, but for our football team, too,” Heupel said Tuesday. “Having this week knowing that you’re going to be the guy, I think, gives him the chance to continue to get his feet on the ground and get ready for kickoff here in a week and a half.”
