The Hartford Animal Shelter is nearing full capacity, and officials are urging people to adopt as a surge in animal abandonments overwhelms the facility.

“We’re almost at full capacity. We house 22 dogs, we’re up to 18 right now,” Sherry DeGenova, Hartford Animal Control Officer Sherry DeGenova said. “We’re almost at our max.”

DeGenova said the summer season is typically one of the worst times for pet adoptions, as many people are away on vacation. Meanwhile, the rate of abandoned dogs continues to rise across the city.

“It’s usually, you know, you get a couple dogs in, you can adopt some out. Adoptions are at a standstill right now,” she said. “We pick up as many as five dogs in a day, which is just crazy.”
