AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Augusta Commission members on Tuesday started trying to figure out how to cover a nearly $11 million budget deficit .
The budget deficit comes several months after it was discovered that the city had to pay more than $6 million to the federal government for unspent grant money.
Another factor, according to interim Finance Director Timothy Schroer, is employee health care being over budget by $7.8 million.
At a meeting Tuesday, Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle made a motion to take $10.9 million out of the fund balance to cover the shortfall. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Brandon Garrett and amended to include adopting full rollback millage rates.
The motion was approved 10-1 with interim Commissioner Tanya Barnhill-Turnley voting no.
