Oswego, N.Y. — Two mosquito samples tested positive for the Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE) in West Monroe and Palermo in Oswego County, health officials said.
The Oswego County Health Department was notified by the state health department on Tuesday of the positive results. One sample was collected Aug. 12 in Palermo, and the other was collected Aug. 14 in West Monroe.
The West Monroe site was part of the target area sprayed on Aug. 7 . The Palermo site is a new location with positive results this summer.
“These lab reports remind us that, although aerial spraying is effective in reducing some mosquito populations, it does not completely eradicate all mosquitoes or the diseases they carry,” said Vera Dunsmoor, Oswego County’s public health director.
