SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - As Hurricane Erin continues to move along the East Coast, there are many differences when it comes to tropical storms.

There are many different types of storms that can happen in our ocean. Tropical storms, hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons are all warm-core systems, categorized by location and wind speed. However, an extra-tropical cyclone is a cold-core storm, which is essentially a regular low-pressure system.

One of the factors for all types of storms is the location. During the summer, tropical activity is high in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

"Hurricanes are typically in the Atlantic Ocean and Eastern Pacific, typhoons...those are the names for the Western Pacific, cyclones are usually in the Indian Ocean," said 22News Storm Team Meteorologist
