A lot has happened since Henry Kessler had last appeared in a game as a center back for St. Louis City SC, most notably the acquisition of another center back, Fallou Fall, who will be a contender for playing time, just like Kessler and Timo Baumgartl.

With interim coach David Critchley committed to a four-man backline, he said last week he didn’t see a scenario where all three could be on the field at once. Which means the competition will be high in practice this week with all three players fit enough to start.

“Healthy, healthy,” is how Kessler described the competition Tuesday. “I think we all bring things to the table. All can play those positions. So it's been good.”

Kessler started and played 57 minutes on Saturday against Chicago, his first appearance since June 8 in Portland. I
