BOSTON (WWLP) - Boston's status as a sanctuary city that limits cooperation with federal immigration authorities has been up in the air since the Trump administration began carrying out mass deportations.

Boston's Mayor Wu is fighting back against the federal perception that sanctuary cities are illegal, and she says they make our cities safer.

Wu says the city of Boston received a letter from the United States Attorney General promising prosecution of city officials and withholding of federal funds unless Boston cooperates with mass deportations. The letter called for a response from the city by Tuesday.

"Here is our response. Stop attacking our cities to hide your administration's failures," said Mayor Wu. "Boston will not back down from who we are and what we stand for."
