SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - At the beginning of the year, WKYT first told you about plans to remove the low-head dam at Great Crossing Park in Scott County.

This announcement was met with backlash from some community members, but state leaders said it was an ongoing safety concern that needed to be addressed.

“The safety concern, coupled with public input, public meetings, we determined it was in our best interest to remove this,” said Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Rich Storm.

Storm said the low-head dam is more than 100 years old and is owned by the department.

This week, in partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife and the Kentucky Waterways Alliance, the decision was made to remove the dam.
