The Multnomah County jail system will soon have a new leader , a doctor who finished his residency about two months ago.

Corrections Health announced that Dr. Stephen Kane, of Maryland, is tentatively expected to take the position of medical director starting Oct. 7. He will be paid $299,193.31 per year.

Kane, 32, finished a residency and master’s program in public health in late June at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in Baltimore. He is currently applying for a medical license in Oregon.

Kane will replace Dr. Eleazar Lawson, who left the position in March under unclear circumstances. Lawson had been on the job about 19 months and was paid $349,133 per year. The entire jail system has faced scrutiny in recent years amid a spate of inmate deaths. Seven people died
