WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) - The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is ready for year two of providing security for county schools with school resource officers.

For several years, the Beaufort County Schools had private security.

The sheriff’s office says while they serve as protectors for the students, they’re glad the partnership between them and the school district is back, so that they can re-establish relationships and trust.

Sergeant Christopher Kelly is serving as the SRO for Washington High School this year.

He says it’s extremely necessary to have a law enforcement presence at schools in this day and age. Kelly says, “It’s paramount. We’ve got to be here. These kids deserve to be able to learn in a safe environment. That’s what we’re here to do.”
