CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Currituck County has declared a local state of emergency and issued a mandatory evacuation order for the Off-Road Area of Corolla, effective at 9:00 am on Wednesday, August 20.
Hurricane Erin is expected to cause significant storm surges and coastal flooding in the Off-Road Area.
The beach strand driving area, which is the only way in and out of the Off-Road Area for motorists, is expected to become impassable by Thursday afternoon. Localized flooding is expected in the neighborhoods behind the dunes.
Anyone who may need evacuation assistance should call Currituck County Emergency Management at 252-232-2115. Citizens are reminded to take all household pets with them.
