DETROIT -- Gleyber Torres played in his 1,000th career game on Monday, a milestone he didn’t even realize he had reached until coach Anthony Iapoce told him.
Iapoce also mentioned that Torres is sitting on 499 RBIs, one shy of another milestone. Given how long he’s been stuck there, Torres said he’d prefer to learn about such benchmarks only after the fact.
Torres appeared in 888 games with the New York Yankees over parts of seven seasons before signing a one-year, $15 million deal with the Tigers over the winter .
“Personally, it makes me really happy. A thousand is a lot of games,” Torres said. “I’m just happy to be in the race and hopefully keep going for more years.”
Torres entered Monday night in a post-All-Star-break skid, hitting just .206 with a .601 OPS in 117 plate appear
