GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, MI – A no-body contact advisory has been issued for parts of the West Grand Traverse Bay after 500 gallons of untreated raw sewage were accidentally released into a nearby creek.
The Grand Traverse County Health Department said the spill happened around 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, during repairs on an existing sewer main. The raw sewage was released into Kids Creek through a stormwater drain outlet near the intersection of Cedar Street and Sixth Street in Traverse City.
Residents and visitors are being advised to avoid any contact with surface waters in the following areas:
Kids Creek: From the 6th Street bridge to the confluence with the Boardman River near Wadsworth Street
Boardman/Ottaway River: From Wadsworth Street to the mouth of West Grand Traverse Bay
