MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ala. —

The City of Tuscaloosa, among others, claim they're out millions of dollars in tax revenue so they're suing the Commissioner of the State Department of Revenue.

The City of Tuscaloosa, School District of the City of Tuscaloosa and the City of Mountain Brook are listed as plaintiffs in the lawsuit. They have named Vernon Barnett specifically, saying he failed to keep up with the law and was giving tax breaks to businesses that didn't qualify.

This all has to do with the Simplified Seller's Use Tax - or SSUT. It allows eligible sellers to participate in a program to collect, report and remit a flat 8% sellers use tax on all sales made into Alabama.
