Washoe County commissioners heard over an hour of public comment Tuesday morning, many surrounding the $436,000 grant for remodeling an area inside the Washoe County Detention Center for use by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The grant money is tied to new requirements that 10% of certain federal grants to the state be used for border security. The funding comes from President Donald Trump’s massive budget bill signed in July.

According to the sheriff’s website, the process starts with the state submitting the entire grant for approval to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. If approved, the money will be sent to the state. The sheriff’s office will then submit a request to the commissioners for final approval to accept the funds.
