The New York Mets will be without catcher Francisco Alvarez for the time being, and perhaps the remainder of the season, as they attempt to maintain a hold on a playoff spot. The team announced on Tuesday that they had placed Alvarez on the injured list with a right thumb UCL sprain, just days after he exited Sunday's contest after hurting himself on a slide.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters that Alvarez needs surgery on his thumb . The Mets are hopeful that he can play through the pain for the rest of the season, but Mendoza acknowledged that his year would be over if not.
