CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- This year's Hispanic Heritage Festival of the Carolinas will not happen.
Organizers made the decision to cancel the annual event in Charlotte because of the current political climate on immigration.
Normally, more than 10,000 people attend the festival at Truist Field. This year, organizers said they couldn't risk bringing that many Latinos together because of deportation concerns.
"If I were to come out and see that our community was being targeted and people were taken away, I couldn't live with myself," said Rick Herrera, co-founder of the Hispanic Heritage Festival of the Carolinas. "I just couldn't."
That worry is what ultimately led Herrera and his team to put a stop to what would have been the fourth annual event.
