SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Plaza Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City will cease operations on Nov. 1, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced on Tuesday.
It said the hotel is closing due to the rising costs to maintain, operate and update it. It was built in the early 1970s.
Initially, the church plans to use the location for parking during the Salt Lake Temple open house beginning in April 2027, but a long-term use has not yet been determined.
The hotel is currently owned by Property Reserve, the real estate investment arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Tuesday's announcement said that after it closes, ownership will be transferred to the church, and demolition will begin.
