These lovely little flitting zoomers start to appear in our area of Northern Nevada sometimes as early as April.

Just as the dandelions are starting to bloom and the snow is receding. Hummers can survive in temperatures down into the 20s. If they have a source of food, like full feeders, and the early blooms of dandelions and some weeds that bloom early.

The little guys go into a state of torpor when it is that cold. Torpor is, according to Google, “a state of decreased physiological activity in an animal, characterized by reduced body temperature and metabolic rate.”

It can best be described as a sort of hibernation, albeit very short. Like until the sun comes back around and warms their little bodies. There are some 366 varieties of our spring/summer visitors.
