IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Iowa City passed an equal protection resolution which would ensure human rights protections to gender identity including protections for transgender people in the city.

City Council members said the resolution re-affirms Iowa City’s commitment to enforce title 2 of Iowa’s civil rights code, that ensures protection against discrimination based on gender identity, allowing legal enforcement of anti-discrimination policy.

Many people spoke at city council about the resolution, some sharing gratitude for the protections it offers, while others asked the council work to continue to take further action.

The resolution comes as a response to a recent state law that made Iowa the first state to remove gender identity from the state’s civil rights act.
