TACOMA, Wash. — School resource officers will no longer be stationed on any Franklin Pierce School District campuses — a decision that drew cheers from local parents, activists and alumni during a rally that blended celebration with demands for further change.

"Make some noise because we canceled that contract!" one speaker shouted to the crowd.

Applause erupted as demonstrators marked what they called a five-year effort to remove SROs from schools.

"This is a huge victory for students, families, and the broader community," said Talison Crosby, a member of Pierce County Immigration Alliance.

But even as attendees celebrated, they also voiced concern over the presence of immigration enforcement officers near schools.
