Dozens of Chattanooga residents filled City Hall to weigh in on Mayor Tim Kelly’s latest budget proposal, which centers on a new property tax rate of $1.93. The rate is 32 cents lower than the current $2.25 rate.
Supporters praised the plan as a balanced approach that strengthens city services while easing the burden on taxpayers.
“The 1.93 plan is a responsible compromise lowering the tax rate while keeping Chattanooga resilient, competitive, and welcoming to the next generation of leaders,” said UTC student, Beeta Baghaevaji.
The proposal is expected to generate nearly $45 million in revenue, funding raises for Chattanooga police officers and firefighters.
Starting pay for firefighters would increase from $48,000 to $50,000, while police salaries would see a larger bump — from $43,00
