Donna Ellen Ellway was born on March 9, 1949, in Hailey, Idaho, to Norman and Betty Watson. She grew up with her sister, Melody.

As a child she was a member of the Campfire Girls and spent family vacations enjoying the outdoors in the Sawtooth Mountains.

After graduating from Wood River High School in Hailey, she married Philip Ellway and had three children, Philip, Brian and Jennifer. She worked part time for the Wood River Chapel in Hailey.

It was at work in 1987 that Donna suffered a debilitating stroke that left her with almost no use of her right side. After a long period of physical therapy, Donna moved to Boise.
