MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The national cost of electricity is increasing at twice the pace of inflation, according to newly released federal data.

"I think it's been excessively high," said Charles Pointer, an East Memphis resident. "I think it's a little ridiculous."

Energy experts told FOX13 it's an issue of supply and demand.

"When there is more demand for electricity than there is supply, prices go up," explained Abe Scarr, energy and utilities program director for Public Interest Research Group.

Households continue to crank up their air conditioners to cope with especially hot days.

However, Scarr said the country's data centers, including xAI's two sites in Memphis, are using a lot of electricity.
