MIAMI GARDENS — Dolphins tight end Darren Waller, acquired in a July trade with the New York Giants, is being activated today from the physically unable to perform list, the team announced.

Waller, the 32-year-old who was a 2015 sixth-round pick of Baltimore, was retired since June 9, 2024, when he was with the New York Giants. At the time Waller said he’d lost his desire to play football. The trade to acquire Waller, announced on July 1 and becoming official on July 7, brought him out of retirement. The Dolphins received Waller and 2027 conditional seventh-round pick and sent the Giants a 2026 sixth-round pick.

It was a growing mystery why the Dolphins hadn’t activated Waller sooner. Coach Mike McDaniel said Waller wasn’t in football shape, and later said he didn’t want to activate Wall
