Outer Banks under evacuation orders as powerful storm skirts the coast, threatening life-threatening conditions

Hurricane Erin, the first Atlantic hurricane of 2025, is a Category 2 storm churning over the Atlantic and threatening North Carolina with coastal flooding and strong winds, officials said Wednesday. While the hurricane is not expected to make landfall in the U.S., mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for parts of the state’s Outer Banks.

As of 11 a.m. EDT Wednesday, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 110 mph, just shy of a major hurricane designation. Erin, which had previously exploded to a Category 5 on Saturday before being downgraded, was moving north at 13 mph.
