California Republican leaders are fighting back against a proposal that Gov. Gavin Newsom released last week to redraw congressional district boundaries in response to a similar plan in Texas.
California's plan, if approved by voters in November, could flip up to five Republican seats in Congress to Democrats. Texas' proposal could flip five Democratic seats to Republicans.
Under the proposal, Republican U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa would continue to represent District 1, but Shasta, Siskiyou and Modoc counties would no longer be in his district. He would see the district boundary redrawn to take in Lassen, Plumas, Butte, Tehama, Glenn, Sierra and parts of Lake, Mendocino and Sonoma counties.
