Sheriff Bobby Kimbrough Jr. is recovering from open heart surgery after he learned that he had a serious heart condition in July.

“It’s been a humbling experience,” Kimbrough said Tuesday. “I’m just grateful.”

Kimbrough, 64, spoke about his medical condition with Dr. Hadley Wilson at a news conference at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. Kimbrough posted a Facebook message Monday about his medical condition.

For three years, Kimbrough has struggled with cholesterol issues, he said at the news conference. Kimbrough said he refused to take statin medication that lowers cholesterol levels.

“It caught up with me in July,” Kimbrough said.

A CT scan revealed that Kimbrough had a blocked artery to his heart.
