ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) - Clay Fire Territory is mourning the sudden and unexpected passing of the longest-ever serving member on the department.

Clay Fire announced on Facebook that retired Fire Marshal Dave Cherrone has passed away.

Cherrone retired three years ago after serving the department for 52 years.

He started out as a volunteer firefighter after graduating from Clay High School. He then got hired by the department and received promotions throughout the years before becoming Fire Marshal.

Cherrone spent his career helping people through education, investigating fires, writing grants for the department, enforcing codes, and so much more.
