When Gregory Groom and Kylee Monteiro met at an Attleboro park in February, they hit it off.

At the time, Groom told police, he was looking for new friends and struck up a conversation with Monteiro and two of her friends. After the day they met, Groom and Monteiro texted often.

Montiero was in a “tough spot” with her friends and family, and Groom believed she was being abused by a family member, though he told police he later learned that was a lie. The relationship “started off strong,” but Groom said he believed Monteiro was manipulative, and he began to drift away from her after a few months.
