ELTON, La. (KPLC) - A proposal to raise water and sewer rates in the Town of Elton is set to be considered at a special council meeting tonight.

A water rate study indicates a rate increase is necessary, town officials said. At its Aug. 6 meeting, the council introduced an ordinance to amend rates, explaining the town is “catching up” after years of not increasing utility rates.

The suggested water rate increases are 20% in 2025, 5% in 2026 and 2027, and then a standard 3% in the following years.

Town officials gave several reasons for the proposed increase, including cost-of-living increases, buying water from an Allen Parish water system, and keeping up with aging infrastructure. Additionally, municipal utility funds must meet certain requirements to be considered sustainable.
