SAN FRANCISCO — Sony announced Wednesday they're increasing prices of its PlayStation consoles in the United States due to the "challenging economic environment."

The change comes after President Donald Trump added tariffs to a number of goods, including electronics and chips made outside the U.S. In April, Sony increased the PlayStation 5 console hardware in the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand by 10% to 15% for the same reason.

Sony, PlayStation's parent company, estimated earlier this month the impact of the additional U.S. tariffs on its operating income at $476 million. Sony creates the majority of its PlayStation 5 hardware in China, according to The Verge . Consoles were not included among the technology exempt from Trump's tariffs.
