BUXTON, N.C. — In Buxton, North Carolina, severe ocean overwash is already being seen, but locals told 13News Now that they're holding onto hope to brave the impacts of Hurricane Erin.
Two motels — the Outer Banks Motel and the Cape Hatteras Motel — have stood the test of time for generations, but they are now facing significant damage from direct overwash impacts from Hurricane Erin.
The water stood several feet deep in the motels' lots for hours after it was brought in by the tides Tuesday afternoon.
One local high school teacher, Randy Ratliff, said he and other residents are holding their ground and praying they get through the weekend. Ratliff moved to the area just four days before Hurricane Irene struck the area in 2011.
