AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin-area is ranked the fifth highest in the nation for the number of homes at risk of wildfire damage, according to a new study by analysis group Cotality.
New data found over 94,000 homes in the Austin area are at moderate or greater risk for wildfire damage.
Officials say the reconstruction cost associated with it would come to just over $44 billion.
The wildfire risk extends into the Hill Country due to how far embers from a wildfire can travel.
Analysts say with more developments in fire-prone areas, homeowners are encouraged to look at how to create defensible spaces around their homes or using fire-resistant materials in new builds.
Analysts also say a high fire risk leads to insurance problems, with companies limiting coverage or increased premiums.
