Authorities have released the name of a child who died after police say he found a gun in an east Birmingham apartment and accidentally shot himself.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the child as Alex Reese. He was 6.

The shooting happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Birmingham’s Madison Park apartments off Carson Road.

East Precinct officers were called to the 700 block of 24th Avenue Northwest on a report of person shot.

They arrived to find Alex with a gunshot wound to the head. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

“That was my only grandson,” a man at the scene cried out.

Officer De’Rell Freeman the child was in an apartment with two adults when he went into a room, found an unsecured gun and shot himself.
