CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - One of the suspects in a 2021 mass shooting that killed a 14-year-old girl accepted a plea deal and learned how long he will serve in prison on Wednesday.
Manqual Horlbeck had been charged with manslaughter, 12 counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and firearm possession during a violent crime in the May 22, 2021, shooting that left 14 people wounded. One of them, Ronjanae Smith died from her injuries.
In a plea deal, prosecutors dropped all of the charges in exchange for a guilty plea to a single charge of nonviolent assault and battery. A judge sentenced him to 10 years, but with credit for four years he has already served, he could back on the street in less than two years once he serves a total of 65% of his sentence.
