WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - As President Trump’s tariffs on steel, aluminum, and other materials hit consumers, local contractors might start to feel the effects.
In particular, larger construction companies could take a hit.
“I can see commercial being an issue because they have contracts with set prices,” said Mike Schultz. “If they haven’t purchased a good chunk of materials, that’s where those independent contractors are gonna be caught.”
Schultz is a private contractor, meaning he has his own construction company, and doesn’t have to rely on set prices.
He says some of his materials are imported, but he mostly buys local.
“With steel buildings, a lot of purlins come from Mexico, and we do get some steel from China,” he says. “But for a lot of structural stuff we use American steel. It
