An alleged identity thief wanted on multiple charges in a $130,000 fraud scheme has surrendered to Windsor police.

The Windsor Police Service announced Aug. 13 that they had issued an arrest warrant for Kamryn Alexander Bateman, 27, from Burlington.

Police said earlier this month they identified him as a suspect in an investigation that began in June. The financial crimes unit had received a report about a “large-scale fraud” at a currency exchange business in the 3200 block of Dougall Avenue.

Investigators said a man used a fraudulent Canadian passport to transfer about CAD $138,000 in exchange for US $100,000.

After obtaining the U.S. currency, police said the suspect cancelled the Canadian transfer, resulting in a loss of roughly $130,000 to the business.
