OMAHA, Neb. —

On Wednesday in North Omaha, Nelson Mandela Elementary celebrated its 10th anniversary. The school opened back in 2015 with a mission to offer a free private school.

"They had this vision to assist underserved youth and families in this area," school Principal Genevive Core said.

The school has partnerships and programs with Creighton Dental and professional Black men in the community, all to help get their scholars ready for the future.

"To see someone that looks like you reading and talking about their career really gets them excited about what the future can hold for them,” Core said.

Each student even learns to play the violin. Their most recent graduating class of fifth graders moved up to proficient or above.
