Juan Velazquez went to Uvalde to paint a mural of school shooting victim Alithia Ramirez. He didn’t think he’d ever go back. He was wrong.

If you travel around North Texas or scroll Instagram, you can see artist Juan Velazquez’s work . His murals tell the stories of everything from sports icons to people taken too soon.

"I have done a lot of murals, you know, that have a sad story," Velazquez said. "Honestly, I just have a soft heart for tragedies."

So when tragedy hit Uvalde in 2022, Velazquez was among a group of artists who went there to paint murals honoring the young victims of the Robb Elementary School shooting. Velazquez painted a fellow artist, Alithia Ramirez.
