DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) - Duluth police are working to reduce the number of guns stolen from vehicles. There was a spike in 2021, and the number of offenses has hovered in the 20s ever since.

This year alone, police say 17 firearms have been stolen from vacant vehicles in Duluth. The city is on track to end this year with about the same number of firearms stolen from vehicles as last year, which was 28.

That statistic, combined with more than 1,100 vehicle prowls or break-ins last year, led DPD to decide a change had to be made.

Deputy Chief Ryan Morris said, “We try to employ officers on directed patrols to some of our hotspots. So, we try to look at our calls for service, our crime areas and try to target those areas with extra patrols.”
