CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A former Newton police lieutenant charged with second-degree murder was in court on Wednesday as the family of the man he is accused of killing came face-to-face with him for the first time.

Carlos Uribe is accused of shooting and killing 21-year-old Camden Childers on June 26 following a police chase in Conover. Prosecutors said the district attorney found Uribe’s use of deadly force was not justified.

The chase began around 11:56 p.m. when Newton police say officers tried to stop Childers on U.S. Highway 70 for not displaying a license plate, speeding, and reckless driving. The agency says he fled into Conover, where his motorcycle collided with a patrol car on Northern Drive Northwest.
